Studies on the Weekly Development of Extremities of Korean Fetus

Abstract
The measurements on the several items which are the crown-rump length, body length, bDdy weight, lengths of upper limb and lower limb have been done on 3445 cases(1765 of male and 1680 of female) of the Korean fetuses aged from the 14th until the term week of the prenatal -life.
Beside presenting the mathematical averages of the developmental weeks for the above items the studies were extended over the developmental features of the extremities during the each of those weeks by analysing the amount of the weekly increment with the weekly increment coefficient throughout the period. Moreover, the analysis was further extended over the relationships between the amounts of those developments and those of the body length by calculating indices of above items to the body length. From those observations the following conclusive summary have been drawn.
1. The mean values of the crown-ramp length from both sexes were 80.9 mm for the 14th, and 358.0 mm for the term week, and 4.43 times of the growth was completed until the term week in comparison with that of the 14th of the fetal weeks. The indices of the crown-rump length to the body length were scattered between 68 and 70, and were slightly decreased with the time until 24th, and thereafter the indices stabilized until the end of the prenatal life.
2. Of the body length the means from the both sexes were 116.8 mm for the 14th and 519.8 mm for the 40th. The mean value of. the 40th was approximately 4.50 times of that of the i4th.
3. The mean values cf the body weight from both sexes were 37.0 gm for the 14th and 3268.3 gm for the 40th. The mean of the 40th was about 88.33 times of that of the 14th.
4. The mean value of the upper limb of the 40th from the both sexes was 211.2 mm, and was approximately 4.80 times of 44. 0 mm of the 14th. The indices of the length of upper limb to the body length were distributed between 38 and 42, and were slightly increased with the time during the period until the 22nd, and were almost stabilized thereafter until the term week.
5. The mean value of the length of arm of the 40th from the both sexes was 81.0 mm, and was corresponded to 4.39 times of 18.5 mm of the 14th. The indices to the body length were distributed between 115.5 and 16.8, were increased with the time until the 18th, and thereafter the indices were gradually decreased with the time throughout the period of the fetal life.
6. Of the length of forearm, the mean value of the 40th from both sexes was 68.6 mm, and was approximately 4.68 times of 14.7 mm of the 14th. The indices to the body length were arranged between 13.1 and 14.2, were gradually increased with the time until the 22nd, were contrasted with the gradual decrease thereafter.
7. The mean value of the length of hand of the 40th from both sexes was 62.5 mm, was about 5.76 times of 11.9 mm of the 14th. The indices to the body length were found within 9.3 to 12.3, and were gradually increased with the time until the 35th, thereafter they were stabilized during the rest of the prenatal weeks.
8. The mean value of tie hand breadth of the 40th from both sexes was 36.0 mm, was about 5.93 times of 6.1 mm of the 14th. The indices to the body length were found within 5.2 to 7.2, and were continuously increased with the time until the 35th, and thereafter they were statilized throughout the rest of the fetal period.
9. The mean value of the lower limb of the 40th from both sexes was 219.4 mm, and was bout 5.50 times of 39.9 mm of the 14th. The indices to the body length were arranged from 34.2 to 42.3, and were rapidly increased until the 22nd, and thereafter the indices showed a gradual increment with the time until the end of the fetal period.
10. The mean value of the length of thigh of the 40th from the both sexes was 98.1 mm, and was about 4.80 times of 20.5 mm of the 14th. The indices to the body length were scattered within 17.6 to 19.1. were graually increased with the time until the 25th, thereafter they were stabilized throughout the rest of the fetal period.
11. The mean value of the length of the leg of the 40th from both sexes was 91.2 mm, was worth about 5.65 times of 16.2 mm of the 14th. The indices to the body length were found within 13.9 to 17.9 and were rapidly increased with time until the 22nd, thereafter those were gradually increased with time until the end of the fetal life.
12. The mean value of the foot length of the 40th from both sexes was 76.3mm, was corresponded to about 6.03 times of 12.7 mm of the 14th. The indices to the body length is arranged between 10.9 and 15.5, were gradually increased with the time until the 36th, and were gradually decreased thereafter until the end of the fetal life.
13. The mean value of the height of foot of the 40th from both sexes was 24.2 mm, was about 8.03 times of 3.1 mm of the 14th. The indices to the body length were found within 2.6 to 4:7, and were shown continuous increment with time throughout the period of the prenatal life.
14. The indices of the upper limb to the lower limb during the early fetal period were more than 100 which means that the upper limb is longer than the lower limb in each week, and were gradually decreased by the time throughout the period. At the 36th the index was reached less than 100 which means that the lower limb was longer than the upper one.
15. The magnification of growth of the body weight at the end of the tetal period in comprison with the value of the 14th was the greatest(88.33), among the above items, was followed by that of the height of foot(8.03), the length of foot,(6.03), hand breadth(5.93), hand length(5.76), the length of leg(5.56), the length of the lower extremity(5.50), the length of thigh(4.80), lengths of upper extremity(4.80), the length of forearm(4.68), the body length(4.50), the sitting height(4.39) and the length of forearm(4.39) which is the least of all.
16. In accordance with the weekly increment coefficients (refferring the table with the semilogarithmic scale) during the period from the 14th, until the 40th the 18th, 24th and 32nd were the periods for the changing the rates of weekly increment. The trends showed that the rapid growth during the early fetal life is followed by the retarding growth during the latter period of the fetal life.
17. None of the sexual difference was found for the various development during the fetal period under the statistical support.
18. The similarity was found on the size between the Korean fetuses and fetuses from the white race.
